Gastrectomy for Cancer

Introduction

Gastrectomy is performed in cases of gastric cancer.
The advantage of the laparoscopic approach to elective gastric resections is the possibility to better train medical teams in thorough abdominal exploration and dissection, as compared to open surgery. The first published results do not show evidence of specifically approach related complications , while the marginally longer operating time are by far outweighed by the increased post-operative comfort for the patient. The resumption of organ function, performance levels and patient satisfaction are all significantly better when using a video-assisted approach rather than open surgery.
