Introduction

Gastric bypass (creation of a small proximal gastric pouch connected with the intestine by a Roux-en-Y construction) is the gold standard in obesity surgery. It is a hybrid operation causing both food malabsorption and intake restriction. Of all generally accepted bariatric procedures the gastric bypass with Roux-en-Y construction has the best track record: morbidity is relatively low, results are good, and long lasting. The procedure has been performed laparoscopically with similar excellent results.
